SYNOPSIS: On Good Friday, April 13th, 2001, 21-year-old Wendi Long and two friends, drove The 50 miles from Coushatta to Shreveport, Louisiana to do some Shopping.
After a couple of hours at the mall, Wendi and her friends stopped to pick up "Tommy", a friend they had met at Northwestern Louisiana University. The four visited a number of friends in the Shreveport area. At around 11:00 p.m. they attended a party. There was drinking at the party and when it came time to take Tommy home, Wendi said she didn’t want to drive and decided to stay at the party. Her two friends agreed to drive Tommy home. After dropping Tommy off, Wendy’s friends were pulled over by a state trooper and the driver was arrested for drunk driving. Tommy later told police that he was concerned that Wendi might be stranded at the party. He then drove his car back to the party to find Wendi and offer her a ride home. Tommy says Wendi accepted the offer. On the way back, he stopped for gas and a quart of oil. When he walked out of the gas station, he saw Wendi talking to two young men in a black Chevy truck. Tommy said it looked as if Wendi knew the men. Wendi told Tommy that she was going with the two men and they would take her home. According to Tommy, that was the last time he saw Wendi.
Since he was the last person
to see Wendi before she disappeared, Tommy agreed to take a polygraph test, which, according to police, he passed. Under hypnosis, Tommy was able to provide a more detailed description of the black Chevy pickup truck and the two men. His recollection enabled a police artist to produce sketches of the men but no one has come forward to identify them. At this point in their investigation, authorities are pinning their greatest hopes on finding the two men whom Tommy says were last seen driving away with Wendi.
UPDATE: On November 8, 2001, seven months after her disappearance, the body of Wendi Long was found near Louisiana Highway 1, between Shreveport and Coushatta. Authorities checked out the information that "Tommy" provided, but none of those leads panned out. They began to take another look at "Tommy"- whose real name is Robert Rocky Stewart. Stewart had been arrested for check fraud from an unrelated incident and was in jail when authorities questioned him about inconsistencies in his story. Police claim that Stewart confessed to Wendi’s murder and then provided them with details of the location of her body. Wendi was raped and later died from two gunshot wounds to the back of the head. Robert "Rocky" Stewart was found guilty and is serving a life sentence for the murder of Wendi Long.
Personal Note:Wendi and I met the summer after she graduated High School. As one can imagine, being a 30 year old guy dating a college freshman, I was 100% infatuated with her. After about 8 months of seeing each other, we decided to take the next step in our relationship, and Wendi moved in with me. This worked out greatly to both of our advantages since she no longer had to drive from out of town to attend classes and I had one of the most beautiful women I had ever laid eyes on with me every day and night.
Wendi and I had they typical relationship one might expect with a 9 year age difference. She wanted to go out and party every night while I just wanted to relax after a hard days work in preparation for the next days hard work. This led to relatively innocent lies like "I’m going home tonight to see my folks" when in actuality she would be going out to various clubs to be with her friends.
After about 2 1/2 years, we mutually agreed that it would be best if she moved back in with her parents. 6 months later she "went missing", and as the X-boyfriend, I was naturally considered a prime suspect and I can safely say those were the worst 7 months of my life. Various members of her family were breaking into my house, trespassing on private property they COULD NOT have found without information from the country bumpkin Coushatta/Martin police Depts. and even stalking me in parts of town they had no business being in other than watching me. In retrospect I suppose they were still hoping Wendi was alive and just hiding out, but that didn’t make the" fear and pain they caused me any less traumatic. Even after Rocky confessed to the" crime, I never once received an apology for their actions or a thank you for my 100% cooperation, and have even been called a "self-centered asshole" by her brother just a few years ago. Well who the hell else but me knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that I was innocent?? Lot’s of people thought I was really devastated over these events, and I certainly won’t deny it affected me greatly, but the real tragedy was that it reminded me of Kelly Wilson….someone I had lost many years before. Someone I thought I was destined to live the rest of my life with, and someone whom I still cannot forget nearly 2 decades after her disappearance.
